Three persons were last Wednesday allegedly shot dead by hoodlums in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area headquarters in Anambra State.

The deceased, including a youth leader simply identified as Achike, were reportedly killed at the 7th Mile Axis of the area while having a political meeting.

The hoodlums, numbering three, reportedly stormed the area around 3pm and went straight to the venue of the meeting where they gunned down the trio.

It was gathered that the assassins were believed to have come for the youth leader but had to kill the others when they attempted to shield their leader.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said the youths had gathered in anticipation for settlement for the role they played during the just concluded governorship election.

He said, ‘They were eating and drinking and waiting for largesse from the party, having finished the conduct of the election, when suddenly there were gunshots.

‘Before we knew what was happening, our youth leader was on the ground, dead, with two others. There was a stampede as people scampered for safety. Up till now, nobody has asked of the outcome of the meeting because of fear in the land.’

Another source said the meeting was going on when suddenly some men came in and called out the youth leader to come with them outside the meeting arena for a little discussion and he followed them.

But within minutes gunshots were heard in the vicinity and the youth leader, on trying to escape, was gunned down with two others.

‘Yes, we were having a political meeting and the expectation was that we will be giving money for a job well done during the election,’ the eye witness said.

The Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, Mr Ekuri Remigius, confirmed the incident, saying investigation was ongoing.
