Rev. Fr. Phillip Uche Okoye, Parish Priest, Holy Family Catholic Church, Akpo, Aguata LGA, Anambra State, a renowned yam farmer, has again harvested different species of yams weighing over 280KG at an event tagged, “Come See Yams, 2023”.It took place last Sunday, August 20, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Akpo, and was chaired by Nze Henry Dim, Akajiofor of Akpo.
Other dignitaries at the event were Hon. Chief (Engr.) Sir Dom Okafor and family, member representingAguata Federal Constituency, represented by Geoffrey Umeanuka; HRH Igwe Architech J.O. Okpalaezecha, Nnam Oshimiri II of Akpo; and Mrs Eucharia Okonkwo, Omeongo.
Speaking to Fides briefly after the Holy Mass, Rev. Fr. Prof Emmanuel Umezinwa, Vice Chancellor Peter University, Achinna-Oneh, told Fides that God was indeed wonderful and that Anambra State and Igbo land were blessed, while he said agriculture was the way to food security.
‘I am very impressed by the harvest of Fr. Okoye. It is a clear indication that God is indeed wonderful and that Anambra State, Igbo Land are blessed. Agriculture is the way to food security and I urge all our people to embrace it,’ he said.
In his remarks, Nze Henry Dim, Akajiofor of Akpo, commended Fr. Okoye for his hard work and dedication to Agriculture. He said that Fr. Okoye was a role model to all young people in the community.
‘Fr. Okoye is a role model to all young people in the community. He has shown that it is possible to be successful in Agriculture while still being a priest. I urge all our young people to emulate him,’ he said.
The event was also attended by a large number of people from the community. They were all impressed by the size of the yams that Fr. Okoye had harvested.
Fr. Okoye said he was happy with the harvest and that he would continue to work hard to improve his farming skills. He also said that he would use the proceeds from the sale of the yams to support the work of the Church.
The harvest of Fr. Okoye is a clear indication that Agriculture is a viable business in Anambra State. It is also a reminder that hard work and dedication can lead to success in any field.
On March 23, Fr Okoye was presented an Award of Excellence by the Department of Agriculture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Fr Okoye who dedicated the award to his mother, presented it to the Igwe of Akpo.
The climax of the event was the presentation on the Philoko Method of Yam Production and the famous Ugochiyere Cultural Dance, Akpo.
