Virtue of Contentment in Ambition is Required

By Peter Nwasike

There is the biblical injunction, when John Baptist admonished soldiers to refrain from extortion and be contented with their wages. This injunction is not limited to soldiers who were trained to fight and carry guns as tools. It is applicable to those in other areas of endeavours. It means that people should not capitalize on any privilege they enjoy, whether money or fame, to nurse inordinate ambition and escalate unhealthy competition.

There are people who have made success in their career and remain progressively consistent in service to humanity creditably. This shining example is evident in Alhaji Aliko Dangote of Dangote Group of Companies, whose assets can equal that of a State Government, but he had restrained himself from dabbling into politics, nor meddle as godfather.

Another shining example is seen in Chief Innocent Chukwuma, of Innoson Motor Manufacturing Company, Chief Cletus Ibeto of Ibeto Groups, Mike Adenuga, General Theophilus Danjuma (Retired), to mention but a few.

In the Fides Newspaper of July 29-August 4, 2018, page 6 there was news report that Bar. (Mrs) Bianca Ojukwu, has declared her interest to contest election for Anambra South Senatorial Zone. The news speculated that some aspirants had already declared interest and this could precipitate rivalry. These keen aspirants are Chief Ifeanyi Ubah (businessman), Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu (businessman), Hon. Bar. Ikenna Mbazulike Amechi (lawyer). The issue calls for harmonization among them, whether through primary election, or by friendly negotiation, but let wise judgment prevail.

Although the first three, Ubah, Ukachukwu, Ikenna Amechi, have been in aspiration for a long time, Bianca has also been in the limelight of politics for a long time equally, which dated back to her youth, as a contestant in beauty pageants. She won the Miss Nigeria Beauty Contest and went ahead to win the Miss Universe Beauty Contest, as Most beautiful Girl in the World. She prepared herself for public offices by assiduously utilizing her father’s wealth, late Barr. Chief C.C. Onoh, one-time Governor of Old Anambra State in 1983, to graduate as a lawyer.

Then she married late Ezigbo Gburugburu, Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, as a devoted wife, going by the aphorism that “behind every successful man there is a Woman” she was a partner-in-progress with Ojukwu in his leadership of Ndigbo. She stood with Ojukwu at the emergence of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2003, when Ojukwu was the candidate of APGA for the election of Presidency, and again, in 2007, when Ojukwu repeated the contest for Presidency. Ojukwu’s heroism helped to launch Ndigbo in political relevance in Nigeria, and Bianca was a part of it.

Ojukwu felicitated with ethnic groups in Nigeria, that it was said that when former President, Goodluck Jonathan was Governor of Bayelsa State, Ojukwu attended the funeral ceremony of his father, to commiserate with the then Governor Jonathan, and their friendship blossomed.

When Jonathan became President in 2010, he maintained the cordiality. Luckily Bianca, Ojukwu’s wife who accompanied Ojukwu in the condolence visit, had relevant qualification as a lawyer, and eloquence and charisma and intelligence as a former World Beauty Queen, and so based on merit, Jonathan appointed Bianca a Nigeria’s Ambassador in a European country Spain in 2011.

So, if Ndigbo realy appreciate Ojukwu for his services and considering the fact that Bianca is eminently qualified to be Senator, prudence demands that Ndigbo should confortably maintain his widow in any office that she can perform creditably. So, Ubah and Ukachukwu should concentrate in their business empires and use them to serve humanity creditably, by creating employment opportunities from the private sector, just like Dangote, Ibeto, Innoson etc. Humanity will continue to appreciate them highly with respect. After all, they are more popular and respectable than the incumbent Senator from their South Senatorial Zone, Andy Ubah, who has spent eight years there, so they should remain contented where they are, because what they are searching for in the upper ceiling is already within their reach and grip in the lower ceiling, (Ihe ha na-acho n’uko Elu ha enwetago ya n’uko Ala).

As for Hon. Barr. Ikenna Amechi, he was an eloquent and intelligent lawmaker, who was very active, when he was a lawmaker in Anambra State House of Assembly, representing Nnewi South Local Government. Hon. Bar. Ikenna has made success in the legal profession, that is in the judiciary. He can remain there progressively in service to his fatherland, from the Bar.

With his erudisim in law, he can aspire to serve the Nation from the Bench, as a judge. In fact, if he is appointed as a judge, he can do very well in delivering the lead judgment in Election Petition Tribunal (EPT).

So, these eminently successful people in their respective careers should imbibe the virtues of contentment and allow Bianca Ojukwu to represent them in the Upper Legislative Chamber, as she has the qualification and competence for the job. If President Jonathan can find Bianca eligible to serve Nigeria as Ambassador in a European country, why can’t Ndigbo find Bianca qualified to be a Senator, in the Red Chambers of the National Assembly. On the other hand, the youthful Hon. Bar. Ikenna could put his young age into advantage, by waiting for Bianca to complete the eight years of two terms, and after Bianca, can contest to succeed Bianca, in 2031. May wise judgment prevail.
