Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has held its thirteenth Convocation Ceremony with lots of activities to mark the week-long event. The Convocation which started on Monday, 6th May and ended on Friday, 10th May, 2019, kick-started with a Press Conference by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, followed by an Interdenominational Service held at the University’s Auditorium.
Other activities to mark the 13th Convocation included a Research Fair /Exhibition anchored by the former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, OON, who was the guest of honour. The Research Fair was held at Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies.
The Convocation also featured award of Higher Degrees, Honorary Degrees and Installation of Emeritus Professors, presentation of Prizes to the best graduating students, Convocation Lecture, entitled, “National Integration, Peace and Development” delivered by the former Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ken Nnamani, GCON; Award of First Degree at Convocation Arena and commissioning of newly completed projects by the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria and Visitor to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Muhammadu Buhari.
Two hundred and fifty-nine doctorate degree holders received their certificate during the ceremony, while seven hundred and ninety Master’s Degree holders also received their certificates.
The University also awarded Honorary Doctorate Degrees to three great Nigerians who had contributed positively to the development of society, namely, the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Achebe, Doctor of Science; Sir Emeka Offor, Doctor of Entrepreneurship; while Ambassador Babagana Kingibe received Doctor of Politics and Strategy.
The newly constructed gate to the institution was commissioned alongside other seventeen projects put in place by the current administration. The best graduating student was celebrated and appreciated.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ahaneku, said that in the life of every institution, there were three aspects they concentrated on which, he said, included teaching, research and community service.
UNIZIK’s 2017/2018 Overall Best Graduating Student is Mrs Abisi Adaobi Rita from the Department of Banking and Finance. She hails from Nando, in Anambra East Local Government of Area of Anambra State.
