Umueze Uga Community in Aguata L.G.A of Anambra State has sent a save-our-soul message to the Anambra State Government over the erosion disaster presently threatening to sack them from the Community.
Speaking to Fides over the plight after the inspection of the erosion site, the Community leader Nze Agba Francis Nnabuenyi, said they needed government’s urgent intervention before it was too late. He stated t that the Community has been under pressure due to the erosion menace that had claimed their property. He feared that if urgent solution was not proffered, the Community would be destroyed, He further disclosed that both the Federal and State Ministries of Environment had surveyed the erosion site and assured the Community of government intervention, but nothing has been done since their last visit.
He also noted that New Map Company came and assessed the extent of the damage from the erosion, but since then, it had not done anything. He therefore called on the Federal and State governments to proffer a lasting solution.
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman, Hon Jude Ozor, recalled that during the regime of Mr Peter Obi, a contract was awarded to tackle the erosion menace which was however not completed. He said that the Community embarked on a project to divert the flood into a channel which did not yield result. Ozor noted if proper measures were not taken houses, their market and even St Michael’s Catholic Church which is not far away from the site of the erosion would be affected.
He called for urgent intervention of both Federal and State government; even as he added that if nothing was done to tackle the problem, their economy would be negatively be affected. He said the Community now lived in fear.
Some of the residents who spoke to Fides, Mr Ikechukwu Ezekwulaku and Mr Boniface, a resident of Umueze Uga Community, regretted that the government was not doing anything to resolved the problem, saying they now lived in fear.
