The bloody activities of cult groups in Awka are still showing no signs of abating as three young men suspected to be victims of rival cult clashes were gunned down at two locations in Awka last Wednesday, reports Jude Atupulazi.
According to a source, one was killed at Umubele Village in Awka, while the other two were killed opposite the headquarters of a popular Pentecostal Church, Winners Chapel, along Unizik Temporary Site Road, Okpuno. Both are in Awka South Local Government Area.
Fides learnt that the attackers, suspected to be cultists, came in tricycles, popularly known as keke, and shot at their victims.
Reacting to the killings, the Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the attack at the Unizik Temporary Site, said it was carried out by a suspected rival cult group.
His words, ‘It is an incident that involved a suspected attack by a rival cult group. The victims were rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead by a medical doctor on arrival.’
Fides gathered that a combined team of Anti-Cult operatives and the Divisional Police personnel, led by the DPO, B Division, Awka, stormed the scene moments after the shooting.
Ikenga said that investigations had commenced with a view to fishing out the culprits.
Cult killings have become a regular feature in Awka capital city for a long time now, with security agents seemingly not finding a solution to them.
