There are several Nigerian coaches capable of producing better results with the national team than the German tactician. However, corrupt officials are still keeping him on the job, says former Eagles star Etim Esin.

One of Nigeria’s most gifted players, Esin, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to throw aside their plans to offer current Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, a new contract.

The former Bordeaux manager is expected to meet with the NFF sometime in February to thrash out the details of a new contract with his current one expiring in less than six months.
Rohr has done a decent job since taking over as the coach of the Super Eagles, helping the team qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and guiding the side to a third-place finish at the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

But Esin remains unimpressed even as he continues to hail the achievement of the late Stephen Keshi, who led Nigeria to her third African title triumph in 2013.

“Emmanuel Amuneke went to Tanzania and qualified them for the AFCON, Keshi did the same, at this level, let a Nigerian coach the Super Eagles,” Esin Said.

“I know the reason why NFF doesn’t want Rohr to leave because that’s the opportunity they need to siphon money in dollars. But in reality, with the level we are in football, something must be done in that aspect.

“Imagine 1994 we happened to be the best team on the continent, now we’re still looking for Oyinbo to come and coach the Eagles, and all he could achieve was to get to the semifinal of the AFCON, and also got eliminated from the group stage of the World Cup.

Other home-based coaches have done better than that at one time or another,” he added.

He recalled that the late Stephen Keshi guided the Super Eagles to triumph at the 2013 AFCON, becoming the first Nigerian born coach to achieve the feat.
