Remembering Fr Aaron Ekwu

The Catholic Diocese of Awka recently celebrated 2022 Rev. Fr Aaron Ekwu’s Day at St Matthew’s Parish Amawbia, Awka South LGA, Anambra State. This is an annual celebration held by the Diocese towards the Beatification of Fr Aaron Ekwu.

Delivering his homily during the mass, The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus C. Ezeokafor, advised the people to live a life worthy of emulation like Fr Aaron did. He also charged everyone to continue to talk about Fr Aaron.

‘We are the best persons to write our stories. If we keep quiet about Fr Aaron Ekwu, the world will forget him, therefore, we need to continue talking about him and praying for him’, The Bishop said.

Rev. Fr PaulMary Chukwukebe, Vocations Director, Catholic Diocese of Awka and Postulator, Beatification Committe for Fr Aaron Ekwu, describing Fr Aaron Ekwu said he was a man of outstanding virtues. ‘Fr Aaron Ekwu lived an exemplary priestly life, he had outstanding virtues, the way he has touched people through his life and ministry is unmatched, this is the reason why the Diocese is pursuing his beatification.

‘We are gathered here to keep praying, keep gathering testimonies, creating more awareness for this cause, because all of these are needs for the process of beatification to come to conclusion.’ He said

Talking to Fides Media, Secretary, Beatification Committee for Fr Aaron Ekwu, Fr Theodore Ekwem, explained that Fr Ekwu was known for Charity in his lifetime. He also said he was a man of prayer.

‘Fr Aaron Ekwu was ordained in Vienna, Austria in 1965. He was known basically for Charity, that’s what summarises his life. Charity in terms of affection and whatever you can think about. I don’t think we can think about any priest that matches Fr Aaron at the moment. He is one man who can give everything he has.

‘Fr Ekwu had nothing even at death, there was no building to house his remains for the lying-in-state, this is the same man who funded many people in education, this gives the picture of the man we are talking about.’ Fr Ekwem explained.

Testifying about Fr Aaron EKwu, Mrs Ann Asogwsa, testified that Fr Aaron Ekwu was a friend to her family. He made sure peace always reigned in their family. ‘Fr Aaron always go around with happiness around him, he always gives us enough peace. Anytime we visit his office, he always had kola for us. he ensured my husband and I live in peace’,She explained.

Fides recall that Rev. Fr Aaron Ekwu is a Priest of the Old Awka Diocese, he died in 1989 as a result of an automobile accident.
