A contender in the 2021 Anambra governorship election, Sir Damian Okolo, has added his voice to the clamour for a homegrown governor come the next elections. Okolo who spoke with stakeholders in Awka, said it was imperative to have such a governor in order to accelerate development in the state, based on the person's understanding of the terrain and the people.

Okolo, a lawyer and an Estate Surveyor and Valuer, used the occasion to announce his intention to contest for the governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and urged them to work with him in influencing those in the grassroots to choose a candidate that understood and felt their pulse.

Speaking on zoning, Okolo said that Anambra people had agreed and decided that Anambra South should produce the next governor.

'In this zone, Anambra South, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife from Aguata has served as governor; Dr. Andy Uba, also from Aguata, has gone and Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju from Uli (Ihiala) also served as governor from 1999 to 2003. The only time my town, Nnewi, tasted it was when Mrs. Virgy Etiaba held the forte when Peter Obi was impeached for three months. So for equity and fair play, Nnewi should produce the next governor of the state, considering the fact that Aguata, Ihiala and Nnewi are the major planks of the zone,' Okolo argued, saying he had contributed more to the state than most of his fellow contenders.

'Now that this issue of home grown governor has arisen, many people feel rightly or wrongly that we need someone who knows the terrain well. The added advantage is that though I come from Anambra South. I am very well known in the Northern Senatorial Zone where I practice and in Anambra Central where I have many friends. Of all those aspiring to govern Anambra, I possess more credentials in terms of rendering service to the people of this state,' Okolo stated.

On the Church and politics, Okolo is a Papal Knight and a former Metropolitan Grand Knight of the Knights of St Mulumba, for the entire Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi States, insisted that his ambition had nothing to do with any church denomination.

He said he had friends in all the denominations and that they had all expressed their willingness to support his aspiration, even as he pledged to improve on the good work of the current and past governors of the state, as well as run an all-inclusive government devoid of party affiliation.

He announced plans to set up committees for his governorship aspiration which, he said, would include credible people.
