The Transition Council Chairman (TC) of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State, Mr. Onochie Ozoma, and his lieutenants, have commenced drainage desilting after Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo has flagged off the campaign in Onitsha.

It would be recalled that Prof. Soludo during the flag off of Clean and Green Sustainable Anambra which held at Ochanja Round About, Onitsha, enjoined traders to embrace government initiative towards ensuring sustainable cleanliness and drainage desilting, even as he directed all the Local Government Area Chairmen across the 21 local government areas in the state to join while individuals were expected to follow.

Mr. Onochie who was available at Oguta Road, a flash point where Onitsha North LG held the exercise, was busy directing excavators and tippers which were evacuating waste.

Speaking to newsmen after the exercise, Mr. Onochie said, ‘As you can see, we are following the directives of our governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo. He loves to work and we have learnt it from him and we are following his footsteps.’

The Chairman, who Described Prof. Soludo as an indefatigable governor, noted that the launching of Drainage desilting and Operation keep your gutters clean was a historic event in Onitsha and awareness to residents who he said welcomed the campaign for them to stop blocking drainages with waste and throwing away waste materials indiscriminately.

‘We will be cleaning the gutters regularly and all the flash points would make way for easy flow of flooding. After this, we will serve notice to all the people who are operating businesses around the area.

‘They will be our watch dog against those who block gutters with refuse, otherwise we hold them responsible. They will give us information on those who are blocking the drainages,’ said the Chairman.

He further revealed that various enforcement agencies were available to monitor defaulters and anybody caught blocking the drainages with refuse would be arrested and persecuted respectively, just as he said that residents would pay for sanitation levy but that should be after they must have evacuated all the drainages and waste.
