Barely four months of assumption of office as the Acting Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, Igbariam, Anambra State, the Students Union leadership of the Institution has passed a vote of confidence on its helmsman, Professor Greg Nwakoby.
Governor Willie Obiano had appointed Prof Nwakoby from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, to take over from the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof Fidelis Okafor, in March, 2018.
Reacting through a press statement made available to newsmen in Awka, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the institution commended Gov. Willie Obiano for appointing what they described as a seasoned technocrat like professor Nwakoby to pilot the affairs of the University.
‘We cannot fully express how happy the students of this school are; we send a dozen thanks to the Governor of Anambra State, Gov. Willie Obiano, who we believe, knew what the students of COOU wanted at this time by appointing Prof Nwakoby into this great office,’ the statement read.
The statement which was signed by its President, Comrade Benneth Udochukwu and Secretary General, Olisa Chinaecherem, further noted that the new administration had raised the banner of justice, equality and fairness high within a short period.
While recalling that under the watch of the new Vice Chancellor more than 60 students of the Institution willingly renounced their membership of secret cults, the student’s body praised the effort of Professor Nwakoby in sanitizing the institution to stand the test of time.
‘No student of COOU will doubt the good deeds of the acting vice chancellor in just a few months of his stay. In these few months, there has been a drastic decline of cultism and related activities in the university. No fewer than 60 students have willingly renounced membership of various secret cults,’ he stated.
According to the students’ body, there had been a reduction of penalty placed on late submission of files by the students from N12000 to N5000, just as other exploitative tendencies had ended in the university.
‘Our lecturers now meet up with their scheme of work before setting examinations and the results released at the appropriate time,’ the release further stated.
The students expressed optimism that with the current tempo of reforms being introduced in the university, it would soon be ranked among the best citadel of learning in the world.
