Two armed men with an unknown mission attacked the confidential secretary of the Lord Bishop of Awka Anglican Diocese, Right Reverend Alexander Chibuzor Ibezim, Miss Orakwelu Nchetachukwu,
Shooting her twice on the neck before fleeing.
They did not take any of her belongings, including her phones and money which she had on her. She was left in the pool of her blood.
The incident happened at Okpuno behind Jaspino Sachet water factory about 8:10pm last week Friday as she went to her father's compound.
Fides gathered that Nchetachukwu who hails from Agulu but engaged to a man from Imo State, before the incident, had answered a call from her brother who was worried that she was yet to return from work.
According to the victim, she was three poles from their gate when she heard gun shots.
As people scampered for safety, her brother became worried and came out to their gate after she failed to pick her calls, only for him to see what appeared to be his sister's lifeless body. He raised an alarm and people assisted him to rush her to a private hospital in Okpuno (name withheld).
At the hospital, they swung into action to save her life, even as some of the medical personnel doubted her chances of surviving. But after some time Nchetachukwu opened her eyes and shouted, 'Thank you Jesus for saving my life,'and relapsed into a coma. As at press time, she had regained consciousness but yet to speak.
Bishop Ibezim who expressed his shock at the attack, said he could not understand what his confidential secretary had done to anyone to deserve her fate, but thanked God for saving her life.
Fides understood that she had left her work place that day at about 5pm, at Paul University,Awka, and went to the Bishop's Court, Emmaus House, also inAwka, to brief the bishop before leaving at about 7pm via public transport, and later going on foot towards her home.
Nchetachukwu, a diligent worker,is a Ph.D. student who is seen as the bishop's strongest ally,as well as a morally upright young woman. She is seen by many as a character worthy of emulation and somebody who does not allow her position in the office to affect her relationship with others.
It will be recalled that the bishop's wife, Mrs Chioma Ibezim had been attacked in Nimo, Njikoka LGA, and her brand new car stolen under gun point after she was ordered to lie on the road, face down. Till date the car has not been recovered and Mama Awka, as she is fondly called, is still traumatized. This had happened shortly after the husband was consecrated.
Thieves had also attacked the bishop's office some time ago and made away with millions of naira that the workers were unable to remit the previous day.
It is also gathered that the Okpuno area of Awka has been a den of criminal elements who have been having a field day robbing the residents, often violently.
