Obi’s Acceptance, Proof that Politics, Now about Individuals – Princess Nwankwo

A former Senior Special Assistant to former Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, Hon Princess Bibiana Nwankwo, says Nigerians are now more politically enlightened and can support candidates across party lines.

Princess Nwankwo who stated this while explaining why she switched support to the Anambra Central senatorial candidate of Young People’s Party, YPP, Dr Chiedu Umeadi, said such can be seen in Nigerians’ support for Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate.

Princess Nwankwo who addressed her supporters in her compound, Wednesday, with Dr Umeadi present, said although still a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, she decided to support the senatorial ambition of Umeadi of YPP because she was convinced by his manifesto which she saw as beneficial to her people.

‘I think his (Umeadi’s manifesto) will benefit my people more and even though I’m still a full member of APGA, I decided to support Umeadi. We are no longer in the era when people only voted for their party’s candidates. We have diversified and that’s why Peter Obi is making waves in Labour Party. It is a new era; people are supporting who they think are the best candidates. It’s no longer a party thing,’ she said.

Princess Nwankwo said she had not known Umeadi before but was convinced that he was the best candidate for his position and therefore decided to throw her weight behind him.

Responding, Umeadi thanked her for her support and assured the people that he was very qualified and ready to give them effective representation.

He echoed Princess Nwankwo’s stand on the new style of politicking, noting that support for candidates was now a matter of the capacity of such candidates, rather than party.

The event was attended by prominent members of the community and politicians.
