The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Anambra State, has told the state governor, Willie Obiano, to refocus on how to get the 21 Local Governments in the state working and running under democratic government, in response to the true wishes of Ndi Anambra, noting that when these functional democratic governments are in place, alongside their legislature, replete with elected councillors, the third tier will easily manage the affairs of town unions and traditional leaders under their domain, while the state government returns to its superintendence role.
In a press statement signed by Okelo Madukaife, State Publicity Secretary of APC, and made available to Fides, the party regretted that not doing that had proved disastrous to the state’s development in terms of financial management, artificial crises, ‘oftentimes manufactured and fueled from Anambra State Government House’, in town unions and towns, as well as traditional institutions.
APC noted that in the last five years towns like Oraukwu in Idemili North LG; Amanuke in Awka North; Awka in Awka South; Achala in Awka North and even Aguleri in Anambra East, had all fallen victim to what it called unhealthy politicking and interference from the top.
‘In town union administration, Alor in Idemili South; Ekwulobia in Aguata LG; Nkpor in Idemili North and many more, have had the crisis in their towns compounded by the very fact of government taking sides in politically motivated ways in matters in which they ought to be neutral.
‘It is our considered view that jobs can be generated by the adoption of this harmonized model envisaged and provided for in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, than kitchen- meetings in Abuja which duplicate the duties under due discharge by the APC Anambra and South East caucuses,’ the release stated.
While appreciating Gov. Obiano’s media support for the APC’s 2019 presidential candidate, the party said it was mindful that the March 9, 2019 House of Assembly elections in Anambra State were, according toi it, mindlessly rigged in favour of APGA and against the interest of APC, which, the party said, had necessitated 13 tribunal cases.
It insisted that APC would be represented in Anambra State House of Assembly, being that it deserved it.
‘We therefore remind Gov. Obiano that our great party in Anambra State appreciates appointments from Abuja, particularly for loyal APC members who have invested their sweat, courage of conviction, perseverance and hard work, but the top priority for Anambra State now is a functional LG system with three arms of government working and serving them jobs.
‘We have no reason at this point to dwell on the ageing fact that APC got a judgement of the Anambra State High Court, presided over by Hon Justice Peter Nwokedi, to conduct LG polls in Anambra State which has not happened.
‘In the time being it is our surmise that robust actions in the LG democratic governance will take the incumbent governor from where he is now to the right side of history, which he can truly earn,’ the statement read.
This was even as it stated the APC’s readiness to welcome Gov. Obiano off the sidelines and into APC any day.
