The crisis that engulfed the oil rich Community of Ogwuikpele which has so far claimed 8 lives with many buildings burnt down has been brought under control.
The crisis which started like a misunderstanding among brothers of the same kindred over the control and sharing of oil largesse soon took a violent turn following the shooting at a meeting called by the kindred to resolve the disagreements in which 4 persons, including Chief Anthony Mmadupue (the Ajie of the Community) were killed.
In what appeared to be a retaliatory attack, 4 persons including a little girl, a 37 year old woman, an elderly man and an innocent tiler from Anam were shot dead and many houses completely destroyed, plunging the Community into disorder.
The Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Council, Hon. Arinzechukwu Awogu visited the Community and was shocked at the magnitude of the destruction in the community.
Hon. Awogu who went round the troubled spots informed that normalcy has been restored as securitymen have taken over the Community.
The Chairman applauded the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano for his response to quelling the situation in Ogwuikpele from degenerating and commended the Area Commander of Orifite Area Command and the DPO of Atani Police Station for rising to the occasion.
Addressing the Community, Hon. Awogu expressed government’s determination to achieving lasting peace in Ogwuikpele and called on the people to eschew violence as no progress can be made where there is no peace and assured that those behind the crisis will be brought to book.
Meanwhile, the Community has become a ghost town as most people have either ran into the bushes or to the neighboring communities to take refuge and only domestic animals and few women are left in the Community. The males sneak in to take few items and dash into the bushes or across the River Niger to Delta State.
However, the Council Chairman has urged those that have ran away to return home as adequate security has been put in place to secure the Community and will remain in the Community as long as their presence is required.
Following the deployment of men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force and sister security agencies as part of efforts at restoring peace in Ogwuikpele Community, the Council Chairman, Hon. Arinzechukwu Awogu has mobilized materials to help make the stay of the security men conformable.
The materials which include, mattresses, blankets, mosquito nets, buckets, food items among others are part of the Chairman’s efforts at making the security efforts in Ogwuikpele a success following his visit to the troubled Community.
He stressed that no sacrifices for peace can be said to be enough and thus called for support for the men maintaining peace in the area.
The Council Chairman further said that the presence of security in Ogwuikpele was very strategic and designed to serve two purposes of stopping the killings and destruction in the community as well as preventing an impending attack on the Ogwuikpele Community by aggrieved community that lost their people in the Ogwuikpele killings.
