Comrade Jerry Nnubia, has been re-elected as the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Anambra State Council. He is to serve for another four years.
The election took place during the union’s quadrennial conference held at NULGE Secretariat, Awka. His re-election was unanimously agreed upon by all delegates who in their votes insisted that Nnubia should be re-elected to pilot the affairs of the union, stressing that his achievements were eloquent testimonies that he would do more if given the opportunity.
The over 60 members represented by their delegates and affiliates concurred that Nnubia had transformed the organization from being a mere spectator to an investor in Anambra’s economy through quality leadership.
Among his achievements, according to him, in the last four years were the cordial relationship between the State Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress, the successful protest against increase in pump price of petroleum products, hike in electricity tariff and use of estimated billing by Discos and the current New National Minimum wage.
The chairman called on the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC), to immediately issue the implementation table/circular to enable Governor Willie Obiano who, he said, had already firmly promised to pay the new minimum wage, to implement it for the workers of Anambra State. Comrade Nnubia also doubles as the State Chairman of NULGE Anambra State Chapter.
Other officers elected include Comr. Ifeanyi Ofodile (NUT) Vice Chairman; Comr. Paul Uwaeze, Auditor, among others.
The state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, represented by his deputy Dr. Nkem Okeke, for his part, while declaring the event open, thanked the Union for their co-operation while urging them to continue to support the current administration for the interest of all.
The representative of Comrade Ayuba Wabba, the National President of NLC, Comrade Chris Ani, who witnessed the exercise, also applauded Governor Obiano for his firm promise of being the first to pay the 30,000 new minimum wage if fully in operation.
One of the newly elected executive member, Comrade Ifeanyi Ofodile, who is presently the state chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, while speaking to journalists shortly after the election, called on the state governor to include NUT ex-officio on the state government board to enable them to contribute and be closer to the government as applicable to other states of the federation.
He equally called on the state governor to employ more teachers in all the public schools across the state.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Jerry Nnubia thanked the TUC chairman, Comrade Ifeanyi Okechukwu, Anambra State Head of Service, Barrister Harry Uduh, and other national executive members for honouring the event.
