The son of the former Acting President of Nigeria and the erstwhile Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hon. Prince Nnamsom Nwafor Orizu, 26 June, paid a familiarization visit to Nwafor Orizu College of Education (NOCEN), Nsugbe, in Anambra East Local Government Area, an institution named after his late father, Rt. Hon. Prince Abyssinia Akweke Nwafor Orizu.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Nnamsom who is the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor Willie Obiano on Youth Entrepreneurship, Mobilization and Strategy, said he came to familiarize and also interface with the Management of the College on the need to partner the College for accelerated development, noting that he harkened to the call by the Management of the institution led by its Provost, Dr. Ifeyinwa Osegbo, requesting for the presence of Nwafor Orizu’s children.
The former Anambra State chairman, Committee on Petroleum, commended the Provost for initiating and calling for the meeting, describing it as apt and timely, emphasizing that the meeting would further strengthen what he described as the cordial relationship existing between the institution and Nwafor Orizu’s family.
Hon. Nnamsom who applauded the provost for the giant strides recorded so far in the school, ranging from instilling discipline, both in the teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as in the students of the College, and environmental cleanliness, promised to mobilize and channel all his contacts towards the school to join in developing the institution which he described as one of the best in the country.
The Nnewi born grassroots politician while applauding the provost for her managerial acumen, extolled Governor Willie Obiano for the good works the governor was doing in the institution, especially in the areas of infrastructure, manpower development, approving the perimeter fencing of the institution, training and re-training of teaching and non-teaching staff of the College, prompt payment of salaries and allowances, lighting up of the college and provision of adequate security.
Hon. Nnamsom who described Governor Willie Obiano as education-friendly, said he was overwhelmed with joy seeing the shape the College had taken, noting that the governor’s presence in the school had made it the cynosure of all eyes, adding that the governor deserved to be commended and appreciated.
He called on the federal government to honour his late dad with Nigeria’s highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), stressing that his late dad deserved to be accorded that respect having piloted the affairs of this country in acting capacity.
‘I attach GCFR to my late dad’s name, I also address him as such because he deserved it. I see no reason he will not be recognized and addressed in that manner. It is long overdue. I appeal to all well-meaning Nigerians to join in this call,’ he said.
In their separate speeches, the former member representing Idemili South State Constituency and former Chief Whip in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Engr. Tony Uche Ezekwelu; and the deputy president of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Students Matters and Mobilization, Hon. Comrade Innocent Nduanya, thanked the provost for the warm reception, assuring that they were more than ready to partner with the school, especially on the capacity building of the students. The duo described the late Nwafor Orizu as a great man, a pathfinder, sound individual and a refined politician.
Responding the Provost of the College, Dr. Ifeyinwa Osegbo, appreciated them for coming to the College, noting that she was surprised to see all the youth leaders in her school, even as she paid a glowing tribute to the late Nwafor Orizu.
She said the College had concluded plans to build and equip Nwafor Orizu Museum Centre in the College, stating that the Museum Centre when completed would house everything relating to Nwafor Orizu whom she described as a renowned educationist, disciplinarian, visionary leader, philanthropist and elder statesman.
Dr. Osegbo flanked by Dr. Nkiru Nwadinobi, Director of College Continuing Education and the Public Relations Officer of the College, Comrade Benny Xcape Egbunonu, thanked Governor Willie Obiano for his fatherly love and care, describing him as a responsive and compassionate leader, adding that they received their salaries and allowances as and when due.
