The Management of the National Inland Waterways Authority has commiserated with the people and Government of Anambra State over the boat mishap that claimed the lives of ten persons in Umunankwo, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the State.

In a statement signed by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the Agency, Jibril Darda’u, NIWA expressed shock that despite its sensitization of boat operators to adhere to safety guidelines, as well as free distribution of safety jackets to the operators, the captain of the ill-fated boat did not take any of those measures.

The statement further clarified that the actual number of deaths was ten out of the 48 passengers on board as against media reports that over eighty persons were drowned.

The statement said, considering the rising level of the flood, its Area Office in Onitsha had stationed personnel on daily patrol of the waterways for quick response to emergencies as they might arise.
