The Southeast Zone of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has assured the people of Anambra State led by Governor Willie Obiano, of the association's readiness to sustain the existing peaceful coexistence between cattle herders and their host community, the people of the state.
The Southeast Zonal Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, who gave this assurance while speaking with Fides in Awka, commended Gov Obiano on his blueprint for peaceful coexistence between farmers and cattle herders in the state.
He said the arrangement had in no small measure, stood Anambra apart from other states as long as peace was concerned.
It will be recalled that early in the life of the present administration in Anambra State, Gov Obiano had held a meeting between the Hausa Community in the state and indigenous farmers in which an agreement was reached by way of compensations payable by any party which either destroyed farmers' crops or killed cattle belonging to the herdsmen.
Siddiki expressed satisfaction that both parties had been honouring the pact, leading to peace between farmers and cattle herders in the state.
He assured the people of the state that nothing would change as the herder community in the state were committed to sustaining the peace, even as he noted that many of them saw Anambra as their home, having lived here for many years, speaking the Igbo Language and having children born here.
'We regard this state as our home. We are part of this state and are committed to its progress and well-being. We are happy that we have been living peacefully with one another and this is thanks to our governor who provided the platform for peace,' Siddiki stated.
The MACBAN chairman also assured that they would continue to explore more peaceful ways of relating with their host community and called on other Southeast governors and beyond to emulate the Anambra example.
