Three persons were confirmed dead and many others sustained various degrees of injuries, when two lorries last Tuesday, crashed into the busy Afor Market, Ibughubu, Umuchu, Aguata L.G.A, Anambra State.

According to eye witness accounts, the ghastly motor accident occurred when the trailer that was loaded with Dangote Cement, lost control and crashed into the market that is along Uga-Umuchu-Umunze Highway, alongside a tipper that was directly in front of it.

Fides gathered that the Dangote trailer that was coming down from Uga to Umuchu- Umunze in a high speed, lost control when the driver was trying to negotiate the bend crossed with wood used to barricade the market from the highway, and consequently hit the tipper, with the two vehicles crashing into the said Afor Market.

It was confirmed that three persons (all males) lost their lives in the unfortunate incident, while many others were wounded. This was even as wares and shops worth thousands of Naira were destroyed in the market that was filled with people and wares on the Afor Market Day.

The dead were identified to be the driver of the trailer, the conductor of the tipper and an indigene of Ibughubu Village, Umuchu, who was at the market. The driver of the tipper and the conductor of the trailer were not seen at the scene.

When contacted by Fides, the parish priest of St Patrick's Catholic Parish, Umuchu, Rev. Fr. Lawrence Maduagwu (whose parish is opposite the market), expressed worry over what he described as the almost frequent occurrence of accident at the Afor Market axis.

On possible solution to the accident, the Catholic priest recommended the relocation of the market to a safe place out of the major road, so as to keep the highway free for motorists. He observed that bumps could be more disastrous if considered for the road.

Meanwhile, the house member-elect for Aguata I Constituency, Hon. Carter Dike, on hearing of the sad incident, visited the seen immediately to assess situation.

The Umuchu-born house member-elect, who won the House of Assembly election on the platform of APGA, commiserated with the victims whose shops and wares were destroyed, the bereaved and the wounded. He went to the hospital at Ibughubu, Umuchu where the wounded were receiving medical treatment and promised to settle their hospital bills.

As at the time of filing this report, one of the injured was said to have been transferred to Dionye Memorial Hospital, Ekwulobia, for major medical attention.

It will be recalled that a major accident involving a lorry fully loaded with wood, occurred at the same market on a Sunday evening a few years ago, with many losing their lives while others were wounded in the incident.
