Comrade Abuchi Onwumelu of Fides Newspapers, has emerged as the new treasurer of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council in the just concluded election. The election was held on Thursday, 17th of January, 2019 at Mr. Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, behind CBN, Awka.
Comrade Onwumelu polled 49 votes as against Betty Onuchukwu of Correspondents' chapel who polled 22 votes.
Onwumelu alongside six others were inaugurated immediately after the election by the Vice President of NUJ, Southeast Zone C, Comrade Petrus Obi and they would pilot the affairs of the union for the next three years.
All the newly sworn-in officers were returned unopposed; except the office of the treasurer which was contested between Comrade Beatrice Onuchukwu of the Correspondents' Chapel and Comrade Abuchi Onwumelu of the Fides Chapel; and the latter emerged victorious.
The newly inaugurated officers included Comrade Emma Ifesinachi, Chairman; Comr. Francis Ekpone, Vice Chairman; Comr. Emma Uduagha, Secretary; Comrade Abuchi Onwumelu, Treasurer, Comr. Ogemdi Ozoemena, Financial Secretary; Comrade Okechukwu Onuegbu, Auditor and Comr. Aloysius Ofordile, Assistant Secretary;
While inaugurating the seven-man exco, Comrade Petrus Obi, Vice Chairman of the NUJ in the South East, praised the Anambra State Council for a successful election and inauguration. He tasked council members to lend their support to the new team, while also urging the new exco not to allow their personal interest to override the collective interest of the union.
Speaking on behalf of the new officers, the chairman, Comrade Emma Ifesinachi, pledged that his administration would sustain the tempo of good leadership and the integrity of the union by eliminating quackery and raising the image of the profession in Anambra.
In his own remark, chairman of credentials committee for the Anambra NUJ election, Okey Maduforo, praised the Council for a successful transition; and also commended his committee for adhering to the constitution of NUJ in discharging its duties.
In his message of gratitude, the newly elected Treasurer, Comrade Abuchi Onwumelu thanked NUJ, Anambra State Council's members for the confidence they reposed in him by casting their votes to enable him emerge as the Treasurer for the next three years.
'The journey has been a very tortuous one, the way was strewn with intrigues and booby traps. However, I'm only pleased that at last I can heave a sigh of relief to say, thanks be to God.
'I'm not unaware of the hugeness of the responsibility you have just rested on my shoulders. I am not oblivious of the high expectations particularly considering the sensitivity of the office which I have come to occupy.
'I also salute my opponent in this contest, Comrade Betty Onuchukwu, for being a great fighter who brought out the best in me. I extend a hand of fellowship to her as we make to work together as a family we have always been.
'May I express my profound gratitude to the Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency Chief Willie Mmaduaburochukwu Obiano (Akpokuedike Global) for creating an enabling environment, I thank my principal, Bishop P.C Ezeokafor of Awka Catholic Diocese for his fatherly love and care, the security agencies in the state, especially Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Baba Umar and State Director of Security (SDS), Anambra State, Mr. YL Yusuf for being there for us.
