By Jude Atupulazi and Ikeugonna Eleke
Sunday, January 6, was a watershed in Anambra State as thousands of Anambrarians from the 21 local government areas of the state and beyond gathered at Emmaus House to be part of the special interdenominational service organized for the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP, Mr. Peter Obi, by his party. It was the first of its kind after he emerged as the running mate to Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, report Jude Atupulazi and Ikeugonna Eleke.
The venue was filled to capacity and it was difficult to find parking space outside as the line of parked vehicles extended to the end of all the adjoining streets as the people of the Anambra State trooped out in solidarity with the former state governor.
In a short speech to introduce Mr. Peter Obi, the PDP governorship candidate in the last Anambra State governorship election, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, regretted that the Buhari Administration had caused the citizenry to live in fear due to failed leadership. He therefore charged Nigerians to rise up and seize their destiny by enthroning what he called a purposeful and tested leadership, capable of confronting the country's problems that included unemployment, acute hunger, mindless borrowing, fractured economy, among others.
In his own speech, Sen. Ben Ndi Obi, after quoting Vanguard Newspaper's report of 5th January on Nigerians that had been killed recently, said the only way to stop the atrocities and misgovernment going on in Nigeria was by voting out the APC and voting in the PDP.
After reviewing the performance of Mr. Peter Obi in all the positions he had held, he said he had all the qualities required to help Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to restore the glory of Nigeria.
Speaking, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the PDP Mr. Peter Obi, who was at the event with his wife, Margaret, thanked the people of the state for such unprecedented reception accorded him. He said his mission was to assist Atiku in restoring sanity to the country by re-creating a country where unemployment would be tackled, jobs created, infrastructure provided and the economy rebuilt.
Earlier, the PDP chairman in Anambra State, Chief Ndubisi Nwobu, who recalled the promises of the APC during electioneering, including making the Naira one to a Dollar, reduction in the cost of food items, stoppage of importation of refined petroleum products, among others, said it was time to vote them out since not one of those promises were delivered.
Some prominent politicians in the state, such as Chief Hygers Igwebike; Nollywood star, Yul Edochie; former PPA strong man, Godwin Ezemo; and the chairman of Reformed APGA, Azubike Iloh, led their numerous supporters to formally join the PDP.
The Bishop of Awka Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Bishop Alex Ibezim, who officiated during the interdenominational service, said only servant leaders could salvage Nigeria.
He said, 'Our country needs servant leaders, leaders who will serve selflessly. We lack leaders like Nehemiah. Nehemiah served in the king's palace, but didn't take pay for the work he did.
We need leaders like Nehemiah. Nehemiahs are fast disappearing in Nigeria. We must pray for God to give us God fearing leaders through this election.'
Priests also took the opportunity to pray for Obi and his wife, Margaret, against any form of attack ahead of the election.
The party received and presented PDP flags to new entrants, including: Godwin Ezeemo, Yul Edochie and Hygers Igwebuike who were accompanied by hordes of supporters.
Other notable attendees were Sen. Uche Ekwunife, Chief Osita Chidoka, Chief Chris Uba, Hon. Chu Chu Onyema, Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife, Hon. Chris Azubogu and Okey Ezibe, among others
2019: Obi Dispels Rumours Of S'east Leaders Working Against PDP
Meanwhile, the vice presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Peter Obi, has dispelled rumours that some leaders of the party in the zone were working against the party in the forthcoming presidential election.
Obi who addressed members of the party during an interdenominational service and reception organized for him by the party in the state at Emmaus House, Awka, said the leaders of the party in the regions and all the members were working as one family.
'Let me tell you all, PDP members in the Southeast are working as one family, and when the votes are turned in, you will all see it. We are working as one, big family,' Obi assured.
Obi who regretted that Nigerians had suffered greatly under the APC Government, promised that as vice president, he would ensure that major roads in the Southeast would be completed as against the propaganda being peddled by the APC Government currently. This is even as he assured that the Onitsha/Umunya Road would be completed in six months under the Atiku/Obi ticket.
