It was a gathering of who is who and emotional reunion in Awka recently as six brotherly towns in Ihiala Local Government Area namely, Azia, Isseke, Lilu, Mbosi, Orsumoghu and Ubuluisiuzo under the aegis of Ebonesie Progressive Union, Awka branch held its yearly get-together. Ebonesie as the name implies is a Union where the indigenes of the above mentioned communities (Men abd women) come together under one umbrella known as Ebonesie Progressive Union to form a common front.
The sumptuous event which was sponsored by the member representing Ihiala II State Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Pascal Agbodike started with an opening prayer, breaking of kolanut, introduction and exchange of pleasantries.
Political appointees, professors, administrators, teachers, academics, engineers, pharmacists, business men and women, doctors, lecturers, politicians, retired and serving military and police officers of Ebonesie extraction were in attendance.
In his opening remark, the chairman of Ebonesie Progressive Union, Awka branch, Prof. Dennis Aribodor expressed gratitude to God for bringing them together once again, saying that he was ready to contribute his quota in ensuring that the body moved from strength to strength, adding that he cherished the gathering more than anything else.
Prof. Aribodor who is a researcher and a Lecturer in the department of Parasitology and Entomology Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka urged the people of Ebonesie to take the Union seriously, explaining that the association was basically constituted to serve as a rallying point for the people of the area.
Aribodor flanked by his wife, Og called on non members to identify with the association, noting that the Union had put in place a sound organizational structure. The university don thanked the sponsor of the programme, Honourable Paschal Agbodike for painstakingly hosting them, even as prayed God to replenish his purse.
Aribodor who fluently delivered his speech in Igbo Language stressed the need for continuous usage of Igbo language, especially in public gathering. He called on his kinsmen and women to always interact with their children in Igbo to enable them get accustomed to their mother tongue as well as protect their Igbo identity. He announced that the next meeting would witnessed well organized quiz competition
Addressing the members, the member representing Ihiala II state constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Pascal Agbodike urged his constituents to rally round him to enable him actualiize his reelection bid, noting that he would continue to evenly distribute democracy dividends, assuring them of efficient and effective representation.
Hon. Agbodike flanked by his wife said he had helped in reconciling many communities over Igweship tussle, noting that he would ensure that the right people were given certification of recognition by the Anambra State government.
'We have initiated the process and we are succeeding. I'm out to serve my people. We are working. We will do more. Normalcy will be returned to all the communities in Ihiala II constituency who are facing one form of communal crises or the other. Support my reelection bid,' Agbodike pleaded.
Earlier one of the founding members of Ebonesie Progressive Union, Awka branch, Sir Simon Obidiegwu said he joined the association in the year 1992 under the chairmanship of a popular photographer, Okoli photos from Orsumoghu.
He noted that the the aim of the coming together was to bring men and women from the six towns together for them to know one another, interact socially and also to think towards the growth of the six communities.
Chief Obidiegwu stated that the Union since inception had grown in strength in-terms of membership and that at a stage Mr. Gab Nnuriam provided meeting accommodation at St. Paul's Church premises, noting that the hosting of the monthly meeting later became rotational whereby members host the meeting in their houses, adding that the rotation afforded the members the opportunity of knowing themselves more.
'One good aspect of the rotation was the competition among members in terms of entertainment despite the fact that the Union outline the quantity of kola and crates of mineral required by the hosting member. The accommodate problem for the monthly meeting was solved by the current chairman, Prof. Dennis Aribodor. He secured our present venue, Ubatel hotel premises through his friend. We are proud.
'The Union has achieved something in Ebonesie by playing a key role in organizing unity among Igwes, Obis, PGs and creating awareness in politics within the state. During the period of Ferdinand Ifeanyi, he called meeting for Ebonesie PGs and shareholders for discussion to create awareness in other to attract government attention to Ebonesie. Numerous meetings were held at Orsumoghu for that awareness.
'Our yearly end of year party has been a grand way of ending the year and thanking God. In most cases individuals host the party by voluntarily contributing , donating money or items for the yearly party. Members look forward to it because it is the only occasion where family member come together to interact socially. We attende weddings, traditional marriage, Ozo title taking, burials to fraternize with members, he concluded.
Fides reports that the Women Wing of the Association was known as Udoka Women Association with Lolo Benedette Eleanya as president, Agatha Nwachukwu as Vice, Uche Nnuriam as Secretary; Mrs. Felicia Anazodo as Asst. Secretary.
In an interview, one of the founding members of the association and immediate past president of Udoka Women Association, Lady Cecilia Obidiegwu enjoined women to make themselves available and also join in moving the Union forward.
Refreshment, dancing, speeches, appreciation, presentation of cash gift by the chairman, prof. Aribodor and Honourable Agbodike to children who performed excellently during quiz and dancing competition formed the highpoints of the occasion.
