The Ulukanachukwu Multipurpose Co-operative Society Awka Chapter has held her 2018 first annual meeting general on Saturday, 8 December, 2018, at St Jude's Catholic Church Hall, Agu Oye. Tracing the history of the co-operative, the President, Kennis Onuh stated that on 2nd October, 2016, the Catholic men Organization of St Jude's Parish under the leadership of Comrade Anaero Nathaniel deliberated the idea of establishing a co-operative in the parish but it was not lunched due to some reasons, saying in 2017, the plan for establishing a cooperative was perfected and by December 2017 their certificate of registration was out with other cooperatives stationeries for operation. He added that Ulukanachukwu multipurpose cooperative an agricultural business and poultry farm model. He maintained that the cooperative has plans to collaborate with local, state and federal government agencies, professional and other cooperative in training the youth and to improve their capacity for wealth creation.
Speaking at the event, Rev Fr Donatus Oragwam who spoke on Agro Business Opportunity stated that the poultry farms are of great profit when taken good care of. He talked about different ways of cultivating food crops, saying there are many ways of cultivating each crops in season and each crop that was planted has it own way of growing. He noted that maintaining crops would make it to grow well which would attract customers to buy. He added that crops are profitable when taken care of.
Also speaking, Mr Raymond Chetauya, who spoke about Agro financing, stated that Agro was an important business, but so many people are neglecting it. He maintained that over the year's Central Bank has been making progress in ensuring use of Nigeria made product instead of importation of goods from abroad. He added that there are many interventions from central banks to promote agriculture in Nigeria. He maintained that Central Bank offers loan to the general public with low interest under Agric guarantee safe funds, saying so many schemes are opened to enable the Central Bank loan to the general public.
Another speaker, Mrs Chinyere Odegbunam, spoke on Cooperative Education, she stated that cooperatives started in England in 1948, saying that cooperatives are enterprises that have double functions which must be economically viable, compete in the market place and do as good, or better than enterprises that seek profit as the ultimate goal.
