At least 50 lawyers on Tuesday at Otuocha, Anambra East Local Governmennt Area, protested alleged assault and detention of their colleague, Barr. Ivy Arinze, on the orders of the Otuocha Police Area Commander, Mr Abdul Osu (ACP).

Addressing journalists, the Chairman of Idemili Branch of Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Barr. P. A. Asame, said that one of their colleagues from Idemili NBA, Barr Ivy Arinze, was assaulted and detained on the orders of the Otuocha Police Area Commander while he was calling for peaceful settlement of a case.

He said, 'A lawyer who came to do his work at Otuocha Area Command was assaulted and detained at the orders of the Police Area Commander, Mr Abdul A. Osu.

'This is least of what I expect and we can't take it like this. We are proceeding to the court immediately. The lawyer was only asking parties for amicable settlement; that is all,' he stated.

Condemning the action of the Police Area Commander, Barr Pat Agbata described the action as unbecoming of a senior police officer like an Area Commander.

As at the time of filing this report, more lawyers from Idemili NBA were still coming, even as police took over security of the area to protect their boss from trouble amid mounting tension.

Efforts made to reach the Area commander proved abortive as police officers denied everyone entry into the compound housing the police station.
