The Awka North LGA of Anambra State, Saturday November 24, honoured the Cathedral Administrator of Awka Catholic Diocese, Rev Fr Matthew Attansey with a meritorious award for his countless contributions towards the development of the community. This was done during the 27th Anniversary celebration of Awka North LGA, created in 1991.

Speaking at the event, the chairman of the occasion, Hon John Arinze, stated that the celebration of Awka North at 27th was one of its kind since its creation in 1991. He maintained that the celebration created an avenue for unity and togetherness among them, saying it would help tackle some problems facing the local government.

He commended the local government chairman, Hon Ferdinand Onwuje, for his selfless efforts in piloting the affairs of the local government within the short of period time he took over from the past administration.

He stated that since the creation of the local government, such celebration had not taken place and he applauded the local government chairman for initiating the celebration.

He advised all to join hands together to work towards taking the LGA to greater heights for the betterment of the LGA and Anambra State as a whole.

In an address of welcome presented by the local government chairman, Hon Ferdinand Onwuje, tracing the history of the LGA, stated that the local government was carved out from the old Awka LGA in 1991 during the administration of the former military president, General Ibrahim Babaginda, on 27th August 1991.

He said that since its creation, Awka North had grown from strength to strength with favourable socio-economic indices in almost all sectors of the economy. He maintained that the level of infrastructural development had been phenomenal, saying they now had the main secretariat building, an imposing two-storey edifice; the council building and the magistrate court.

He added that the local government headquarters which used to be isolated, lonely and scanty, was now a beehive of sorts on a normal working day. He commended all the past and present leaders of the local government for their selfless contribution towards the development of the community, even as he appreciated the effort of the great Jurist and former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the late Justice P.K. Nwokedi, who used his contact to make the creation of the local government possible.

In a vote of thanks, the Cathedral Administrator, Rev Fr Matthew Attansey, thanked the local government chairman and all those who contributed towards his recognition, advising all to join hands towards the actualization of a greater Awka North.
