As part of its programmes to empower the staff with skills for their better living, the Aguata Local Government Council under the leadership of Hon. Eche Ezeibe, has taken the lead, and trained her staff on solar energy utilization for homes and offices.
The One-Day Seminar on Solar Energy Utilisation for the entire workforce of the Council, which was held at the Council Hall, Aguata, and had Lisbon Consult Associated Ltd as the training consultant, was in compliance with the Anambra State Local Government Service Commission guidelines for a sensitization seminar on solar energy utilization for homes and offices.
Speaking at the event, the chairman of Aguata L.G. Council, Hon Eche Ezeibe described the seminar as apt and timely, saying that there was need for an alternative and affordable energy supply in a fast developing country as Nigeria. He noted that power was one of the major factors that have been frustrating economic and social life of the citizenry.
Hon Eche Ezeibe commended the Local Government Services Commission (LGSC), under the Chairmanship of Dr Peter Egenti for his approval to have such very important seminar organized in the 21 LGAs of Anambra State, for the benefit of the workers.
The Council boss expressed his conviction that the workshop/training would expose the participants to the many benefits of solar energy, and called for active participation on the side of the workers. The Chairman equally applauded the massive turn out of the workers to the training and reiterated the readiness of his administration in the training and re-training of workers for greater productivity.
Also speaking, the Head of Personnel Management, Aguata L.G Council, Mrs Gloria Ibezim, on behalf of the workers thanked the council boss for the many empowerment skills opportunity which the Aguata Local Government Administration under his leadership has given to them.
Mrs. Ibezim expressed her delight that just as in the Entrepreneurship Development Training, organized for the entire workforce of the local government earlier in the year, Aguata LG Council was also the first among all the 21 LGAs of Anambra State to empower her staff with solar energy utilization skills.
She commended the Management of Lison Consult for the quality resource persons and materials made availble for the training, and enjoined the participants to attach strict importance to the workshop.
In his address, the Coordinator of the training, Dr. G.U Nwolisa noted that the seminar was designed to increase participants' understanding of solar energy as well as promote the use of solar energy as the best option for coping with Nigeria's power challenges.
Dr. Nwolisa said solar energy was affordable and much more economical than petrol generators, saying that it does not require any running cost apart from the initial installation cost of the solar systems.
He noted that Nigeria has one of the most abundant and least exploited solar energy sources that could be harnessed to fill the energy needs of the country for lighting, business, households, hospitals, institutions and communities.
Nwolisa thanked the Aguata Local Government Chairman for the prompt support he gave to the programme as well as its funding which made the workshop possible. This was even as he prayed that the seminar would offer the people the opportunity to explore and exploit God's blessings of enough power from the sun and not to depend only on generators and kerosene lamps for their basic lighting needs.
One of the participants, Mr. Edward Chikeluba in a vote of thanks, described as satisfactory, the practical aspects of the training which was done through the use of solar panel, inverter, and bulb which he said made the workshop participatory and colourful.
He commended the choice of the seminar topics which included “Nigeria Energy Challenges and Socio Economic Development” and“Understanding of Solar Energy Basic Concepts and Solar System Components, Costs and Prices”.
Chikeluba, who spoke on behalf of other participants, assured they would take all that they learnt home, and appreciated the management of the local government for the seminar which according to him, was an eye opener to them.
