Capacity building and personal development are the springboards for societal advancement and individual effectiveness. These were contained in a press briefing by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Willie Obiano on Youth Mobilization, Hon. Ugonna Emechebe, on the occasion of “Walk for Life” organized by the Anambra State Sports Development Commission.
Hon. Emechebe who said there were many positive potentials inherent in humans, especially youths seeking opportunities for expression, regretted that many youths had negatively channeled their strengths, leading to lawless acts in society.
Emechebe further stated that his office, charged with the responsibility to mobilize the youths in the state towards value re-orientation, character development, participatory governance, increased productivity and effective service delivery, would not relent in assisting the state governor to ensure a better Anambra, noting that the youths were aggregated to exhibit sportsmanship and healthy competition in their varied areas of interests.
The Nnewi-born political scientist disclosed further that Governor Obiano's Administration accommodated many youths as part of his plan to encourage youths in participatory governance and capacity development aimed at creating an enabling environment for them to compete favourably in the comity of states and beyond the shores of Africa.
The event which took place at Njikoka Local Government Secretariat, Abagana, had about 800 persons in attendance, with takeoff point at Governor's Lodge, Awka.
Government officials, trade unions and other dignitaries, as well as St. Martins Catholic Church, Abagana and Fitness Africa, Njikoka Chapter, which played host to the government officials and other dignitaries, participated in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, the state coordinator of Fitness Africa, Comrade Kelvin Freeman, said that physical exercise was a veritable tool for long life and physical fitness. Comrade Freeman pointed out that continual engagement in physical exercise ensured steady supply of blood to all parts of the body which reduced to the barest minimum, the possibility of stroke, high blood pressure and fatigue.
The physical fitness expert further noted that steady exercise fought diseases, increased mental capacity, strengthened the joints, bones, tendon, carpals, tarsal, capillaries; thereby allowing proper circulation of blood in the body which, according to him, functioned in tandem with the digestive, respiratory, nervous, neurological and skeletal systems for optimum performance of the body structure.
The Njikoka Local Government Transition chairman, Hon. George Ozor, expressed happiness at the exercise and asked Fitness Africa and the Anambra Sports Development Commission to make the event a steady one so as to encourage others to follow suit.
Highlights of the occasion were a football match between Fitness Africa and Fitness Club of Awka which ended 4-3 in favour of Fitness Africa; back to back dance clap, jumping jet, group dance and all out physical exercise as led by the state coordinator of Fitness Africa.
