Fire Guts 19 Vehicles in Mechanic Workshop in Onitsha

A mystery fire, early Friday morning of October 26, gutted about 19 vehicles parked in a mechanic workshop in the Awada area of Onitsha, Anambra State.

Fides gathered that the incident happened at around 2am.

The Police public relations officer of Anambra State Police Command, SP Haruna Mohammed, told Fides that 'At About 2am, there was a fire outbreak inside a mechanic workshop located at Amanator Street, Awada.

'About 19 vehicles parked at the workshop were affected. While some were completely burnt, others were burnt partially.'

It was gathered that a high tension pole, whose wire passed through the area was also badly affected.

Haruna said the fire was eventually put off by through the concerted efforts of residents of the area.

'The Police patrol team attached to Awada Division rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent hoodlums from taking advantage of the situation to loot,' Haruna stated.

Fides reports that no loss of life or injury was recorded in the incident.

The police image maker said however that the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, had been contacted to effect necessary repairs on the affected power line, even as he disclosed that case was under investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
