UN Honours MaryAnn Ekeh-Izuchukwu with Nigerian Girl Child Ambassador

The Executive Assistant to the Governor of Anambra State on Community Liaison, Comrade MaryAnn Ekeh-Izuchukwu, was on 25th October, 2018, inaugurated as a Girl Child Ambassador to the United Nations Military School, at Professor Dora Akunyili Women's Development Centre, Awka. This followed her contributions to giving the girl children a voice in society, reports Egodi Nkiruka Okeke.

One of the major contributions was the organization of the just concluded 2018 International Day for The Girl Child held on October 11 at the Anambra State Government House premises.

Speaking on the occasion, the UN Representative and president of Seraphine Outreach, Ambassador Seraphine Chioma Nwosu, said that the honour was conferred on Hon Mrs Izuchukwu in recognition of her contributions to society and humanitarian service in ensuring the implementation of Girl Child Education and abolition of early marriage in the state and beyond.

She further advised young girls to avoid sexual perversion, rebellion, premarital sex, careless life style and lack of focus but to cling to the Girl Child Education for a better society.

In her address, Mrs Izuchukwu thanked God for the grace that made her to merit the honour. She also thanked the United Nations' Representative for recommending her effort in the just concluded International Day of the Girl Child, even as she pledged to continue educating girls on the importance of putting a stop to early marriage.

She further stated that the importance of education in the life of an individual could never be overemphasized and advised mothers to train their children, especially the girls, and avoid giving them out for early marriages.

She said giving out a girl's hand in marriage at a tender age without any skills, information and confidence, hindered the girl from being a better mother and wife and urged parents to embrace Girl Child Education.

Speaker after speaker, including the Commissioner for Social Welfare, Children's and Women's Affairs, Hon. Mrs. Ndidi Mezue; the Girl Child Ambassador to Anambra State, Dr. Mrs. Ezeanwuana, both represented by Mrs. Grace Ojekwa, appreciated the organizers for a successful investiture and Honour to Mrs Izuchukwu as the Special Ambassador to the Girl Child and wished her well for her efforts in furthering the cause of the girl.

They also commended her for her continued humanitarian service in ensuring that early marriage was eliminated and for stirring up the need for people to understand the importance of Girl Child Education.
