An Alumnus of Union Primary School, Awgbu and a Benin based business mogul, Mr. Uchenna Ezeaku, has donated educational and sports materials to former school, Union Primary School, Awgbu and six other public schools in the community.

Among the items donated to each of the seven public schools in Awgbu Community by Ezeaku were two cartons of 60 leaves exercise books; 3 cartons of 40 leaves exercise books; 3 cartons of 20 leaves exercise books; 7 cartons of eraser; 5 cartons of pen; 2 cartons of sharpener and 2 cartons of pencil, alongside some sports materials estimated to cost over 500,000 thousand naira.

The benefiting schools are Union Primary School; Community Primary School; Central Primary School; Okpokoro Primary School; Osikwe Community Primary School; Amaugo Primary School, all in Awgbu Community.

Donating the books, Mr. Uchenna Ezeaku expressed his steady love towards education and guaranteed his total commitment in ensuring that the pupils discovered their true selves in life. He said that his main motivation towards the book donation was as a result of the book evangelism embarked upon by others during his school days. He therefore beckoned on the pupils to learn how to give back to society and expressed optimism that the schools would benefit more from the pupils in the future.

Speaking to Fides, the donor, Ezeaku, disclosed that the idea behind the book donation, done on a yearly basis, was the result of favour which he received from some philanthropists 40 years ago during his primary school days. Noting that the donation was in return of that favour, he recalled how the books donated assisted him academically as his parents could not afford all the required books.

He maintained that the donated books had the capacity of serving the entire pupils in the seven schools for two terms, even as he revealed that he had been donating books to schools in Awgbu Community for the past 10 years.

He disclosed plans to extend the gesture to secondary schools in the near future.
Ezeaku explained that the yearly book donation to the pupils in primary schools in Awgbu Community was to lend a helping hand to families and reduce the finance burden associated with children's education. He recalled how the books donated by others in his primary school days kept him in school, saying that without such help, completing his primary education would have been a Herculean task for him.

He stressed the importance of education in the life of every individual and charged the pupils to be serious in their academic pursuit in order to achieve their dreams, even as he assured of his continued support to education.

Also speaking, the Headmistress of Union School, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Eze, while expressing happiness over the donation, thanked the donor for remembering his humble beginning and for giving back to the place where he was formed. She disclosed the benefits which the pupils had been deriving from the donation and called on others to emulate Mr. Ezeaku.

For his part, the former Manager of Union Primary School, Rev. Fr. Emmaunel Achuke, encouraged the donor to continue the book apostolate which he had started, saying that such gesture had kept many pupils in school. He cautioned the pupils against misusing the donated materials but to guard them against destruction.

Receiving the donated materials, the Head Teacher of Community School, Awgbu, Comrade Justina Nnoye Arinze, and Okpokoro Primary School, Mrs. Andaline Ndigwe, alongside others, called on God to pour unlimited blessings on the donor. They disclosed that the donated materials would assist the pupils in achieving their passion and vowed to distribute the books equally to all pupils according to their classes.
