The House Committee members on Public Accounts have embarked on the verification of local government areas' account for the year 2016, with a call on all the local government authorities to appear before it for the verification of their 2016 budget and also to come with necessary documents to assist the committee in carrying out its job efficiently and effectively.
The committee led by the member representing Anaocha II State Constituency, Hon. (Engr.) Charles Ezeani, last Monday summoned the management of Onitsha North and South, as well as Aguata Local Government Areas, for verification of their various accounts.
Speaking during the meeting, the chairman of the Committee, Hon. Charles Ezeani, explained that the 1999 constitution, as amended, empowered State Houses of Assembly to verify the audited account of every organ of state government annually, with a view to ensuring transparency in that disbursement of government fund.
The committee charged local government authorities in the state to key into the reforms introduced by the State House of Assembly to reposition local government administration.
The committee after verifying the 2016 audited accounts of Aguata, Onitsha South and North Local Government Areas, asked Onitsha North Local Government Authority to appear before it again on Wednesday next week.
In a vote of thanks, the Head of Administration, Onitsha North Local Government Area, Mr Emmanuel Okoro, assured that they would meet the requirements of the committee in their next meeting.
