Ministry Of Environment Takes `Waste Disposal Campaign’ To Nnewi

Ministry of Environment, has embarked on road walk to campaign against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and total disregard of environmental cleanliness in Nnewi metropolis.

Commissioner for Environment, Mr Michael Okonkwo said, 'The campaign is imperative since research has shown that Nnewi has grown beyond its original plan.

'Again, it is worthy of note that people from neighbouring towns also sneak in to dump their refuse illegally,' he said.

Okonkwo noted that the challenges at the dumpsites were being taken care of and urged the Ndi Anambra to adopt proper waste disposal attitude.

'Stop dumping refuse in drainage channels and on the roads, by ensuring that wastes are properly bagged before sending to designated waste bins,'he

Okonkwo, however, enjoined all to assist government to heed the campaign messages stressing that necessary action would be taken against defaulters.

'Gov. Willie Obiano is passionate about cleanliness in Nnewi in particular and Anambra at large.

'He spends so much in paying waste disposal contractors as well as daily sweepers to ensure that environmental sanity is achieved in the state.

'I hereby urge everyone to assist the government to serve us better,' Okonkwo directed.

For his part, the Transition Chairman, Nnewi North LGA, Hon. Chukwudi Orizu urged the people to be law abiding.

He, then, enjoined the Ndi Anambra to purchase sample waste disposal bags from the Ministry of Environment, Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) or from markets.

Mr Orizu, expressed gratitude to the state government for its doggedness in maintaining safe, clean and healthy Anambra.

Also speaking Mr Stanley Nkwoka, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Environment, urged the people to maintain clean and healthy environment and adhere to rules.

The campaign, which touched all strategic streets and markets, took-off from Nnewi North LG Headquarters to Nwafor Uruagu Market, through Eke Amobi to Nworie Market and back to the headquarters.

The commissioner also inaugurated a group known as ‘Environmental Taskforce’, whose duty would be to curtail ugly environmental practices in the state.
