Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has cautioned youths against drug abuse to enable them to actualize their visions and dreams in life.
Governor Obiano gave the advice during the fifth edition of Victoria Onyido Quiz Competition for Post Primary Schools organized in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The event which was held at Professor Kenneth Dike E-Library, Awka, attracted dignitaries, philanthropists, principals, as well as students from various schools in the state.
Governor Obiano who was represented by his Special Adviser on Special Duties and Continuous Voter Registration, Dr Amaka Akudo, appreciated the efforts of the NDLEA for sponsoring and championing the course against drug abuse in the state.
The traditional ruler of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area, and the sponsor of the programme, Igwe Alex Onyido, represented by Dr Ifenna Onyido, implored youths to canvass against drug abuse in their various communities, and schools, as well as help to propagate the drug law.
The NDLEA State Commander, Mr. Sule Momodu, explained that the essence of the event was to promote drug law, empower and motivate students, as well as educate them on the dangers, effects and implications of illicit drugs, and called for collective efforts in reducing the menace.
In their separate speeches, the chairman, Post Primary School Service Commission, Lady Joy Ulasi, represented by Mrs. Eucharia Ilika, Managing Director Tiger Foods Limited; Dr Donatus Ebubeogu, represented by Mr. Martin Osuji, and a board member, Aguata Zone, Mr. Patrick Udokogu, described the event as apt, urging parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children to know when they derailed.
For their parts, a student from Anglican Girls’ Secondary School, Nnewi, Faithful Umeze, and her Community Secondary School, Umuoba-Anam counterpart, Stephen Kalu, said they were committed to taking the message to every nook and cranny of their towns.
Presentation of plasma TV, Binatone fan, school bags containing different books and laptops to students that came first, second and third, respectively; and set of school band to the wining school, formed the highlights of the event.
