NCS Reveals Identity of Inmate Freed in Anambra by Gunmen

– Announces N.2m Reward for Information to Recapture Inmate

The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) has revealed the identity of the inmate freed by gunmen in Anambra State last week, while returning from court.

The command also announced a reward of N200, 000 for anyone who could provide useful information that could aid the recapture of the inmate.

The gunmen had attacked and killed men of the service at Nanka, while returning to the Ekwulobia Correctional Centre, taking away the inmate.

A press release by the Anambra Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Francis Ekezie, gave the name of the freed inmate as Chidi Nwankwo, who was brought in for trial after he aided the escape of his brother, Anayo Nwankwo, who was standing trial for arson.

The press release read in part, “Chidi Nwankwo is the inmate whose gang members allegedly attacked the Nigerian Correctional Service escort vehicle on its way from the court at Nanka, Anambra State.

“He was forcefully released after the escort NCoS personnel and a police officer were killed. Below are his particulars.”

The service gave his detail as; Custody No: C/No:28/2021, age: 46yrs, charge No: MCNA/16c/2021, date of remand: 17/03/2021,

Native of Enemuogo kindred, Umudiabo Village, Ndiowu in Orumba North L.G.A. Anambra State.

The inmate was accused of assisting his brother, Anayo Nwankwo, who was being tried for arson, to escape, leading to his own arrest, before he was freed by the gunmen last week.

Ekezie said, ‘The State Controller, NCS, Barr Emmanuel Nwakeze, has also announced a cash prize of N200, 000 for anyone with useful intelligence that can assist in his recapture.’
