Mothers Urged to Emulate Blessed Virgin Mary for Better Society

By Michael Nnebife

Rev Fr Gerald Onwumelu of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Awka, has advised mothers to emulate the virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary to show light and the glory of God in their families for a better society.

Rev Fr Onwumelu gave the advice in a homily during a Holy Mass to mark the 2023 Mothers’ Sunday at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Awka.

The Catholic cleric described motherhood as a vocation with great honour and emphasized the need for Christian Mothers to strive to live out virtues of compassion, decency, prudence, holiness, among others, as responsible mothers beaming the glorious light of God in a family.

He noted that the primary assignment of a responsible mother was to look after the family but regretted that many women today had abandoned what he described as the noble obligation to pursue economic activities and devote much of their time to some lifestyles inimical to the care of the family required from a responsible mother.

Congratulating the Mothers at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Rev Fr Onwumelu thanked God for their lives and prayed for His grace to enable them to overcome obstacles to heavenly race.

Among the highlights of the Holy Mass was a special thanksgiving by the Catholic Women’s Organization of the church.
