Lawmakers in Anambra State House of Assembly held a valedictory session in honour of the fifth Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, amidst outpour of emotions.
Fides reports that the special session was held at the State House of Assembly Complex in Awka.
This is coming less than two days to the end of the life span of the present administration. During the session, lawmakers of the seventh assembly, led by the Speaker, Right Honourable Uchenna Okafor, eulogized the Obiano for his transformational leadership in all sectors of the state economy.
Speaker Okafor said the honour was considered necessary in view of the cordial relationship that existed between the legislature and other arms of the government, which, he explained, was evident in many ways, especially in the massive development of the state, as well as the peaceful atmosphere such that there was no rift between the two arms of government.
While stating that what he described as the motions and people-oriented bills from the state House of Assembly received expeditious attention from the former governor, the Speaker pointed out that in spite of what he described as conventional achievements by Obiano, he went the extra mile to build monumental projects of international standard, including the International Cargo and Passenger Airport, International Convention Centre, three flyover bridges in Awka , among others.
Also speaking, the member representing Awka South, Constituency One and Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Nnamdi Okafor, who read the citation of the outgone governor, described him as an achiever and a trailblazer.
The member representing Anaocha Constituency Two, Chief Ejike Okechukwu, who commended the governor for introducing development in all aspects of the state’s economy and improvement of the standard of education in the state, expressed optimism that Professor Soludo would perform better, just as the member representing Njikoka Constituency Two, Sir Pete Ibida, and their Anambra East Constituency counterpart, Honourable Obinna Emeneka, stated that the former governor’s vision and mission statements, leading to his security initiatives, threw open the floodgates of investments into the state.
In his valedictory speech, Chief Obiano appreciated them for their kind words to him and his administration, asking them to convey his gratitude to their various constituencies who facilitated the twenty-one over twenty-one and nineteen over twenty-one election victories.
He assured that he would not forget the lawmakers even after exiting office, asking them to give more support to his successor.
The special session attracted sitting and non-sitting members, including the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo; members of the Anambra State executive council; traditional rulers, presidents general of Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, Barrister Titus Akpudo; Vice President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene; State Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Sir Norbert Obi, among others.
Later, as a prelude towards the handover of the government of Anambra State, Obiano, conducted Soludo round the facilities at the governor’s office, Government House, Awka.
