The Chief of Protocol and Deputy Chief of Staff to the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Mr Uzuegbunam Okagbue, says he is aspiring to represent his people in the Senate to do the proper business of law making that will bring a new lease of life to his constituents, rather than relying on constituency projects.
The former banker, popularly known as Uzu, who spoke with Fides in Awka last Sunday, said the major concern of a lawmaker was to look at the challenges of the people they represented and develop laws that would make life easier for the people.
‘Every lawmaker has a team. Make laws with your team that you will present on the floor of the Senate to be passed into law to make life easier for the people. A lot of the laws have not been touched in the last 20 years. You see, the reason people have continued to scramble for positions to represent their people in the Senate is because the only thing they think about is constituency project.
That’s the reason for all this noise. There’s really no money for me to make anywhere anymore. Even if I cease to work anymore I will be able to train my children in school.
That is the basics. I won’t be looking for more money to make in the Senate but I will be looking for ways to impact on the people positively and my children will reap the reward of my good will which will come from the things I will do as a senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District.
‘I’m leveraging the goodwill of my father, Chief Chike Okagbue. He was popularly referred to as Bessoy. So I understand what goodwill is. I will ensure that I will not be going anywhere for constituency project which is what everyone is going about to campaign with. In doing a road in my community, it is the Federal Government that is doing it, not me.
If my community requires roads, the 58 communities will put together their various needs and pass it on to me and I will ensure they go into the bill that will be passed into the budget. Those needs will form part of the budget and regardless of what I do, they will be done.
And what I will do is to follow through to see that they will be done. I will do that and the derivables that come from being a senator will be shared among the 58 communities,’ Okagbue said.
Speaking further, he said he had already made enough money to such an extent that he would not be looking to buy such things as cars as a senator.
‘I was chauffeur driven to school as a child in a Rolls Royce to Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha. When I was driven to school, my course mates would come out to watch the car that brought me. At this stage of my life I have come to realise that nothing is more profound than the value you add to people’s life, rather than accumulation of wealth.
‘I am going to represent my people very differently in a way that reflects me, Uzu; because right from secondary school I had started picking awards. I have a certificate of a Dengramite. I went to the university and got good awards for not being the normal human being in the university.
I have excelled as a banker, as well as in the service of Anambra State. I am going to bring the same consciousness I have carried with me in doing the right things, from secondary school to date, into the representation of Anambra Central,’ Okagbue assured
