The Anambra State Government has ordered the sealing off of a building under construction belonging to the owner of a collapsed building.
The Commissioner for Works Anambra State, Engr. Marcel Ifejiofor, handed down the order during his visit to the site of a collapsed three-storey building at the Ifite Area of Awka.
Engr Ifejiofor, who made it clear that the state government would not compromise the life and property of the people because of lack of professional competence, insisted that certain engineering specifications must be followed in building projects.
He said although no death was confirmed, work on the other building belonging to the same developer would be sealed off pending when professionals assessed the quality of materials being used for it to avoid loss of life and property.
He harped on the need to patronize the Anambra State Materials Testing Laboratory and other building regulatory organizations that provided quality control needs in the building industry in the state.
He said patronizing the laboratories would help abate the attendant loss of life, property and resources, occasioned by building collapse.
The chairman, Nigeria Society of Engineers, NSE, Awka Branch, Engr. Edmond Nkah, who spoke to newsmen at the site, said engineers had been having a running battle with contractors on the need to employ the services of COREN registered Engineers so that any problem arising from the contract would be heaped on the engineer.
He charged contractors in the state to adhere strictly to standards and pleaded with the government to constitute a panel for a full scale investigation of the collapse.
