A football competition among the six communities making up Aguata 1 State Constituency has taken off in Amesi. The competition tagged, ”Ezeno Unity Cup”, according to the sponsor, Engr GOC Ezeno, is aimed at galvanizing the youths of the area towards showcasing their talents and possibly becoming professional footballers.
The six communities taking part in the competition include Amesi, Umuchu, Uga, Akpo, Mkpologwu and Achina.

Speaking at the opening ceremony which saw teams from Amesi and Achina lock horns, Engr Ezeno, the president general of Akpo Development Union, enjoined all the teams not to see the competition as a do-or-die affair but as something that would be used to promote friendship by adopting the spirit of sportsmanship.

He disclosed plans to make the competition an annual one if he was given the mandate to represent the constituency in the State Assembly, as well as bringing in scouts to take accomplished performers to bigger clubs to pursue a professional career.
Ezeno who is contesting on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, earlier told Fides that the choice of Amesi for the opening ceremony was borne out of its position as the eldest of the six communities, noting that the competition was part of his cardinal programmes which was to empower the youths at the micro level, just as the governor of the state was doing at the macro.

‘We are mobilizing the youths and we want the people to support me. Skill acquisition is another one of my cardinal programmes which I will embark upon if given the mandate to serve my people,’ he said.

One of the people who graced the occasion, Rev Fr Prof Pantaleon Umechukwu, Dean Faculty of Mgt and Social Sciences, Tansian Varsity, described Ezeno as an accomplished, honest and God fearing man who could be relied upon at any time. According to him, as an industrialist, Ezeno had empowered many youths and had proved to his people why he should be trusted with their votes.

The two teams, Achina and Amesi, played out a goalless draw.
The highlight of the opening ceremony was the kick off performed by Ezeno.
The ceremony was attended by many dignitaries in the area, including the Local Government chairman of APGA, Hon Obiora Ezechukwu.
