The Excellent Ladies of Valour and Steel ELOVAS Foundation, Awka Zone 2, on March 24, 2019, celebrated the 2019 International Women’s Day with the theme: THINK EQUAL RIGHT, BE BOLD FOR POSITIVE CHANGE, BETTER THE WORLD.
The celebration which was held at De Oasis Bar & Kitchen, Secretariat Road, Aroma, Awka, Anambra State, featured talks and discussions on the theme.
Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary, ELOVAS Foundation International (formerly Excellent Ladies Forum (ELF) International), Lady Ifeoma Ezenyilimba, described the Int’l Women’s Day which was celebrated annually on March 8, as a focal point in the movement for women’s rights.
Pointing out that the event was an international occasion to celebrate the political, leadership, economic and cultural achievements of the women, to mention but a few, Lady Ezenyilimba noted that the Women’s Day ought to be an occasion to celebrate Nigerian’s great women such as late Professor Dora Nkem Akunyili.
The secretary of ELOVAS Foundation Int’l, described the theme of the event as apt, saying that there was need for equal right for the women so as to better the balance for an improved society.
She condemned occasions where the male individuals denigrate their female counterparts, saying that it was unacceptable for the men to molest the women just because they were of the opposite sex.
Lady Ezenyilimba called for the need for the women to be given their rightful positions in politics, families and other places of authority in the society. This was even as she stressed the need to put an end to domestic violence and inequality which according to her, often took their roots in the families and carried on in places of work.
The secretary observed that domestic violence could be traced to the family, where parents fought, and husbands beat up their wives in the presence of their children. She observed that such male children would in future, practice what they learnt from their parents, and end up molesting their female counterparts, and beating up their wives when they got married.
Ezenyilimba also called for the need to give both male and female persons their equal opportunities, both in the families and positions in the society.
Also speaking, the coordinator, ELOVAS Foundation, Awka 2, Lady Nneka Onuora condemned occasions where the parents tend to discriminate in the tasks they delegate to their children.
Using her paternal family where their parents never differentiated in the chores for any particular sex, but instead both male and female members of the family should cook and do the washing, among other chores as an example, Lady Onuora urged parents to train up their children equally and properly.
As part of the activities to mark the 2019 celebration, the group earlier made a charity visit to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) Teaching Hospital, Awka (formerly Amaku General Hospital, Awka), during which they gave out various gift items to the patients, encouraged and prayed for them.
