… As Market Union vows Compliance to COVID-19 Protocols
In the face of gradual easing of lockdown announced by the Federal Government, despite the rising cases of Covid-19 in Awka South Local Government Area, the Anambra State Government orders the reopening of the popular Eke Awka Market, reports Alexander Johnson Adejoh and Precious Ukeje
Fides recalls that, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, ordered the shutdown of the market owing to the non-compliance of COVID-19 Protocols by both traders and costomers in the market which was said to be a contributing factor to the fast rising number of coronavirus cases in the state.
The latest action by the government to reopen the market came few days after Eke Awka Market Traders Association, EAMTA, inaugurated the Special COVID-19 Taskforce.
Speaking to Fides, Susan-Maria Emeka, a Vegetable seller in the market, appreciated Gov Obiano for what she termed necessary move, disclosing that her family was pained by the scarcity occasioned by the shutdown.
Reacting to the development, Chief of Staff, EAMTA, C. I. D Anierobi, lauded the efforts of the Anambra State Government for safeguarding the lives of Ndi’Anambra by the initial shutdown of the market.
‘Our Governor is a wise man for closing the market because the life of every citizen matters to him.
‘ Our people are stubborn but the measures and machinery we have put in place to check the lapses of violators is highly commendable,’ Mr Anierobi said.
He also revealed to Fides that defaulters would be forced to engage in community service of sweeping the market or pay a stipulated amount of money.
