Members of the NYSC Freedom of Information Community Development Service have carried their sensitization campaigns to the Afor Market in Nawfia in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, on the importance of the Freedom of Information Act to the citizens of Nigeria.
The President of the group, Mr Ojo Isaac, explained that Freedom of Information ensures transparency, openness and good governance.
He maintained that Public records and information could be accessed through application using the provisions of the FOIA emphasising that if the response was not got at the first instance, after seven days,a reminder could be sent with a time lag of another seven days after which the applicant could take legal action, if the request was denied.
Mr Ojo, however, pointed out that though evey citizen has the right to seek information under the FOIA, there were some exemptions which he quickly outlined.
In his remarks, the leader of the market, Mr Frank Nwobu , thanked the Corps Members for the enlargement stressing that the interaction was an eye opener to them.
He pledged to step down the information to other businessmen and women of their association that could not avail themselves of the opportunity of the enlargement.
Mr Nwobu solicited for similar sensitization campaigns to other segments of the society.
