. . As Awka South LG Begins Desilting

The Governor of Anambra State, Dr Willie Obiano, has warned people who block drainage with refuse to desist from such or be sanctioned, writes Ifeoma Ezenyilimba.
Governor Obiano, who gave the warning during a concelebrated Holy Mass to herald the 59th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria at St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka, last Sunday, declared that blocking drainage would now be considered an offence in the state.
Obiano disclosed that the state government had formed a task force to apprehend offenders, including those who fail to clear blocked drainage in front of their houses and business areas. This is even as he announced that affected buildings would be sealed by the government.
The governor, who also harped on security, re-assured the commitment of his administration to the security of life and property in the state. He noted that Anambra State under his watch would continue to be the safest state in Nigeria.
He announced plans by the state to boost security with the donation of improved security equipment to security agencies in the state on October 11; just as he commended the service chiefs for their unrelenting commitment to optimum security in Anambra State.
Meanwhile, the Awka South LG of Anambra State has commended desilting of drainage to ensure easy flow of flood through the channels.
Speaking to Fides along Nodu-Goodwill Junction Road, Okpuno, Awka South LGA, during the desilting exercise, September 28, the chairman of Awka South LG, Hon Leo Nwuba, said the exercise was to decongest the drainage which were filled with dirt.
He noted that the desilting exercise would create room for easy flow of flood through the channels, and save the asphalted roads from devastation caused by unhealthy flow of flood.
According to Nwuba, because of the congested drainage due to refuse dumps and dirt, the flood flowed into the road in search of free channel, causing havoc on the roads.
The LG boss warned those he described as bad eggs that turned the drainage into refuse dumps to desist from such acts, and instead dump their refuse at designated spots where the refuse containers were kept.
Hon Nwuba added that the LG Sanitation exercise which was in line with the governor’s directive, also included clearing of bushy roads and walkways within the local government.
The chairman who said the state government would after the rainy season, embark on road maintenance works, charged all to imbibe a clean and healthy lifestyle in order to support the ”Keep Anambra State Clean” project.
