Awka Diocesan Catechists End 2018 Annual Retreat

…Inaugurate New Diocesan, Regional, Deanery Excos

The Awka Diocesan Catechists Association has ended her 2018 Annual Retreat with the official inauguration of the new executives of the association at the diocesan, regional and deanery levels of the diocese.

The executives, who were elected on July 30, 2017, to pilot the affairs of the association at the various levels for a single term of four years, has Catechist Matthew Nnamdi Odili, the Catechist of St Mary’s Parish, Ifitedunu, Dunukofia L.G.A, Anambra State, as the president of Awka Diocesan Catechists Association.

Inaugurating the executive on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at the Good Shepherd Chapel of Archbishop Obiefuna Retreat, Pastoral and Conference Centre, Okpuno, the retreat moderator, Rev. Fr. Cornelius Okoye, charged the executives to stand out in faith, truth and good works as ideal teachers of the Church.

Earlier in his homily of the Holy Mass, Rev. Fr. Cornelius Okoye, who is the parish vicar of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Parish, Igboukwu, Aguata L.G.A, Anambra State, tasked the catechists on committed Christian lives, the difficulties notwithstanding.

He advised all against cross-less Christianity, saying that somebody must suffer for breakthrough from that difficult situation. Rev. Fr. Okoye urged the catechists and indeed all faithful to, in their midst of their sufferings, not to stick to their difficulties, but instead, look on to the victory which Jesus Christ destined for them.

Fr. Okoye, who thanked God for the opportunity to contribute to the spiritual wellbeing of the Awka Diocesan catechists through the retreat, urged the catechists to ensure the outcome of the retreat reflect in their lives for the wellbeing of the society and the Church, which was the perfect body of Christ.

Later in his homily of Oct 26 Holy Mass, the Catholic priest exhorted the catechists against lives that were contradictory to the vocation they were called into. Fr. Okoye advised them not to allow their sins overshadow their good works, saying that good works lead one to heaven.

In her remarks, the Director of Awka Diocesan Catechists’ Association, Rev. Sr. Nneka Arenye, MSHR, thanked God for the success of the retreat which brought the diocesan catechists together at the Archbishop Obiefuna Retreat, Pastoral and Conference Centre, Okpuno from Oct 21-26, 2018. Sr. Arenye, MSHR, described the 2018 Retreat during which none of the members experienced any health challenge, but instead recorded an impressive active performance of both the executive and the members, as the best so far for the catechists.

The director appreciated the retreat moderator, Rev. Fr. Okoye, who is a son of a catechist, for doing justice to the spiritual exercise.

Pointing out that the richly packaged retreat was expected to improve the lives of the catechists for the better, Sr. Arenye, MSHR charged the catechists to take home all that they learnt from the retreat, so as to turn into better catechists, better parents and better Christians in the Church, their families and the society.

She urged the catechists to believe in themselves that they can excel, and do their best to bring themselves out from the shackles that discourage growth which some of the catechists often got themselves attached to.
