Awgbu Community on 1st September, 2018, celebrated the Nshi ji Festival, at St. Michael’s Field, Awgbu, Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State. The event which started on 31st August, at Igwe Mike Okechukwu Palace, marks the beginning of new harvest in the entire community and beyond.
His Royal highness, Igwe M.C Okechukwu, during the official cutting of the roasted yam, expressed his joy and gratitude to God, for his protection throughout the year and for allowing them to witness another year of bountiful harvest. He then cut the roasted yam to the admiration of all present, together with well garnished sauce
In a chart with Fides, the Parish Priest, St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Awgbu, Rev. Fr. Emmannel Udechukwu further described the ‘ Nshi ji ‘, as a way of thanking God for his numerous mercies and for granting the farmers fruitful harvests, adding that he saw nothing wrong with people embracing their culture as long it is not done in malevolent way.
For his part, the President General of Awgbu Community expressed his pleasure and thanked all who contributed to the success of the occasion, and prayed for God’s blessing and protection onthe entire people of Awgbu Communities as they celebrate the “ Nshi ji ” Festival.
Dignitaries in attendance were Hon. Romanus Obi, Member representing Orumba North Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly; HRH. Igwe Njima of Arondizuogu; Hon. Emeka Aforka, On Aspirant for Orumba North House of Assembly; Mrs. Ify Obinabo, Special Assistant to Governor on Agriculture among others.
Highlights of the event were; cultural dances, masquerade parades, cutting of the new yam etc.
