The national president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, recently laid the foundation stone of a multi-million naira secretariat complex of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Branch.
Laying the foundation stone, Prof. Ogunyemi extolled the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, for providing a conducive environment for the NAU Branch of the association to thrive in the University, noting that he (Ahaneku) had shown that he was truly a lover of ASUU’s activities.
Ogunyemi urged the Vice Chancellor to rename the Multi Purpose Hall (MPH) to Liberation Hall, arguing that the arena had continued to serve as a rallying point for its members, adding that ASUU fought and won its battle at the arena.
The ASUU boss paid glowing tribute to ASUU Zone and NAU Branch leadership for stabilizing and ridding the Zone of unscrupulous elements.
Receiving the ASUU national president, Prof. Ahaneku expressed happiness for his visit and assured that he would continue to support the association of which, he said, he was a member. He promised to assist the body to achieve the goal of building a one hundred million naira secretariat.
For his part, the coordinator, ASUU (Owerri Zone), Prof. Ike Odimegwu, thanked the national president for his leadership qualities and also commended the Vice Chancellor for his kind disposition.
In an interview, the ASUU-NAU chairperson, Prof. Dennis Aribodor, said the Secretariat, when completed, would house all the executive offices, parking lot, business centres, among others.
Prof. Aribodor while conducting the national president round the site, appealed for support to enable them to complete the project in record time.
Contributing the ASUU-NAU Assistant Secretary, Dr. Bonaventure Uzoh, of the Department of Sociology, said he was overwhelmed with joy, seeing such an edifice being erected in their tenure.
Prof. Ogunyemi later delivered a public lecture titled, ‘ASUU Ideology, Principles and Struggles’, at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
