By Jude Atupulazi

The youth wing of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, has set up an all women committee to look into the incidence of prostitution in the girl child and domestic violence. The committee which has one young woman for each community, is led by Miss Chinweogo Ubah.

Inaugurating the committee at ASATU House, Government House, Awka, July 28, the Anambra State Commissioner for Youths, Mr Bonaventure Enemali, charged them to go all out and identify the factors that forced young women into prostitution and nip them in the bud.

He regretted the negative effects of such vice on women, noting that the state government was determined to fight that and would not hesitate to give its support to any move geared towards stopping it.

The inauguration took place during the meeting of ASATU Youth Wing in which ways of harmonizing activities within the youth constituency were discussed.
Speaking to Fides after the meeting, the president of ASATU Youth Wing, Comrade Osita Ozalagba, said they were concerned about the increasing incidence of prostitution among young women and thus decided to form a committee to explore ways of halting the phenomenon.

According to him, they were aware of some factors that militated against such young women which pushed them into prostitution. He said that such women would now be encountered by the committee to give them encouragement and also enlighten them on how to be useful in society.

Ozalagba who said the committee would be reporting to him, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the ASATU Youth Wing, noting that it remained on course towards charting a new direction for the youth of the state.
