Anambra State Gov’t Celebrates Children’s Day

. . . Children warned against Illicit Drug Use

In commemoration of the 2019 Children’s Day, the Anambra State govt on 27th May 2019, joined in the international celebration to mark the Children’s Day at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka. This year’s celebration, which was themed ‘Drug Abuse Amongst Children: Addressing the Challenges”, had in attendance major stakeholders and children from all corners of the state who participated in the march past and other cultural activities.

Addressing them on the theme of the event, the Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, represented by the State Secretary General, Prof Solo Chukwudobelu, who read President Muhammadu Buhari’s Address on Children’s Day, called for the joint effort of all relevant stakeholders including children to combat the adverse effect of illicit drug use, its accompanied social vices and then strive for a secured future generation.

He advised parents to pay more attention to their wards, noting that the government on their part had set standards to regulate drug abuse in the nation.

The Commissioner for Women’s and Children’s Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue said it was crucial to inculcate the right attitude in children in order to control all forms of drug abuse common among children, to prepare them for the task of fighting the menace associated with drug abuse in the nation.

She commended the State governor, Chief Willie Obiano and his wife Ebelechukwu Obiano for their commitment in ensuring a brighter future for Anambra state Children.This, she said they did through their child friendly approaches and the CAFÉ programmes to raise the standard of living of the people, which was evident in the reduction in juvenile crimes and drug abuse among teenagers in the State.

Some of the pupils who participated in the March past, calisthenics and other cultural activities expressed joy, noting that the 2019 Children’s Day was well celebrated as children were given the opportunity to express themselves through several activities and games.

Awards and prizes of consolation were presented to best performers in different events of the day.
