The Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has presented a cheque of five hundred thousand Naira to the family of the late Barrister Leonard Akaolisa, a member of the union who died in active service.
The cheque presentation was done at the August 2018 Congress of the Union held at Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, Awka.
Presenting the cheque, the state chairman of NUJ, Comrade Emmanuel Ifesinachi, said the money which came from the Anambra State NUJ Trust Fund, was meant to support the education of the child of the deceased member.
Comrade Ifesinachi who noted that the Trust Fund was a supplementary welfare scheme, acknowledged the responsiveness of the state government in supporting the new welfare formula.
The State Director of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Barrister Charles Nworji, in whose organization the late Barrister Akaolisa worked, said such magnanimity was a rare phenomenon in any professional organization, and praised the NUJ and the state government for the unique gesture.
Receiving the cheque, the wife of the late member, Mrs Stella Akaolisa, who was visibly emotional, thanked the union and the government for remembering the family in their period of grief.
